Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has tipped Newcastle United to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
The Magpies were expected to be busy in the January market in a bid to improve their squad for the final months of the season.
The uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the club has caused a number of issues, however, with head coach Rafael Benitez still unsure of his budget for this month.
It has been claimed that current owner Mike Ashley has walked away from talks with potential buyers Amanda Staveley and PCP Capital Partners after a number of disagreements.
Pundit Wright has claimed that Newcastle would be destined to return to the Championship if funds were not made available to improve the squad this month.
Wright told Sky Sports:
“We are just hearing about Newcastle with things breaking down with respects to the money and the buying.
“I feel if they do not get that takeover and they can’t get to spend money – and it doesn’t look like they are – I am sorry to say I think Newcastle might go.”
A total of 23 points from 23 matches has left Newcastle in 15th position in the table – just three points clear of the relegation zone.
The Magpies will attempt to return to winning ways in the top flight when they travel to league leaders Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.
