Burnley striker Danny Ings has emerged as a £5m target for Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur, according to recent reports in the Mirror. The England U21 international has been in superb form for the Clarets this season and has taken the step up to the Premier League in his stride.
Ings has been a breath of fresh air in the top flight this term, and his seven Premier League goals has put Spurs on red alert. According to the Mirror, Tottenham are the front runners for his signature, even though Burnley manager Sean Dyche insists his hitman is going nowhere.
The 22-year-old’s 21 Championship goals last term helped fire the Lancashire club back into the Premier League after a five year absence. This season, Ings has really stepped up to the plate, and his goals and performances have lifted the Clarets out of the drop zone. Burnley will certainly be reluctant to let their star man move on, although his current contract expires at the end of the season.
Burnley desperately need to keep their striker at Turf Moor, at least until the end of the season – Ings could turn out to be the difference between relegation and survival. His sharp, energetic play, as well as his ability to stick the ball in the back of the net, makes Danny Ings priceless to Burnley’s cause.
Ings, who has been described as one of England’s hottest prospects, has struck up a real relationship with his strike partner Ashley Barnes in recent weeks – Barnes scored vital goals in the very creditable draws at Manchester City and Newcastle United, and Ings grabbed the all important winner against Queens Park Rangers a few weeks ago.
From a Tottenham perspective, they would love to see Ings make the move to White Hart Lane to partner Harry Kane up top. Emmanuel Adebayor and the Spurs fans have recently fallen out of love, and misfit Roberto Soldado is still struggling to find the back of the net. Ings would be welcomed in north London with open arms, and it would be a real achievement for the former Bournemouth man to secure a move to a club the size of Tottenham.
The Lilywhites have played the most games of any of the top flight teams so far this term, which will show the resolve of Pochettino’s squad in the upcoming months. They are going to need all of their resources to dig deep in what is going to be a very busy second-half of the season for Spurs. Tottenham have also been linked with the talented young Dutchman Memphis Depay, according to the Mirror, and if that transfer goes through, as well as completing a move for Ings, Spurs will be set to fight on all fronts this season.
The Clarets are undoubtedly going to do everything in their power to keep their star man, but every player has their price, and every player also has their own footballing ambitions. Danny Ings certainly has and undeniable goalscoring ability, and he could be the man to potentially fire Tottenham Hotspur into the top four.
