A collective groan was made by a large number of Sunderland fans after they heard the news that the club are close to signing defender Joleon Lescott.
According to the Northern Echo, manager David Moyes is considering offering the out-of-work player a contract until the end of the season to help the Black Cats in their relegation battle.
The North-East outfit are expected to be without Papy Djilobodji for the next four games due to a suspension for violent conduct, while the publication reports that Patrick van Aanholt could be on his way to Crystal Palace for £12m.

Lescott is a free agent after being released early from his contract at Greek club AEK Athens in November.
The 34-year-old’s last spell in English football was a one-year stay at Aston Villa, where he fell out of favour with the fans after posting an image of an expensive sports car on Twitter just hours after his side’s 6-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Moyes, whose side are three points adrift of safety, is no stranger to Lescott having coached him for three seasons at Everton.
However, the fans are not convinced that he is the right defender to bring in.
